So this morning, the New York Times ran a front page story about John McCain’s “relationship” with a 40-year-old blond lobbyist. Hours later, The New Republic published an article on their website about… the NYT story! Why did it break now? Should the Times have ran it at all?
I wanted to write a story about the New Republic story. If TNR knew that the NYT had the story long before it was published, why did TNR wait until after the NYT published?
Alas, I’m too late. Timothy Noah beat me too it. He hilariously compares the papers to two gunfighters in a stand off, and John McCain to a hooker (I’m not making this up!) Noah argues that any real story has now been discredited, and declares the hooker — I mean, McCain — the winner.
But what if there really isn’t a story? The facts, as I understand them, are that John McCain made his staffers uneasy by spending time with an attractive blonde lobbyist. The NYT waffled on what kind of a story to write and whether to focus on the words lobbyist or blonde. TNR found out about it. The NYT published their mediocre story, focusing on the word lobbyist but sprinkling a little romantic here, a little relationship there. TNR published an interesting story about how journalism works. McCain cried foul and got conservative sympathy. The end.
But what if there was a romantic relationship? That’s still news — big news, Hindenburg-size headline news. I don’t see how an affair can be discredited by some self-reflexive journalist drama. — Hillel Aron

he’s K-Street’s Senator. and he has been since before the Keating 5 bribery scandal nearly ended his career back in the 80s. the man is the machine.
Well, If you Barack Hussein Obama are going to sling mud…. your cocaine use is fair game as well. I’d say your admission to breaking the law in using illegal drugs can be a scope into the content of your character.

Gwegle: Time to refit your tinfoil beanie. Where did Obama sling any mud? You just didn’t this article at all, did you? Flew right over your head. Which was the point in the first place.
Folks with nothing to do but repeat their right or left wing extremist talking points need to realize that the 80% of the country in the middle doesn’t buy it, doesn’t fall for it, and we’re getting a little annoyed at how you waste our air time and bandwidth. Say something original, or stop talking. Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom to spam.

We don’t have to tear away at the fabric of Mr. McCain’s being. He is what he is. He stands for private interest. He doesn’t choose to represent the interests of all of the american people. He does not choose as stated by the Declaration of Independence, “…all men are created equal…”

Obama is for change…..He wants the Govt to have more control. He believes as most of you do…to kill the golden goose. Down with the rich. What you all can’t seem to understand is: America was founded on freedom. Freedom of religion, freedom of Govt and freedom from taxation without representation. It’s been proved many times, if the Govt lowers taxes, forces people to make it on their own, they will work harder. When I was a teen, I took for granted the roof over my head, the food I ate and the money my parents gave me. Now as an adult, I work for every penny and I no longer take anything for granted. It’s the same with our society. Let’s stop handicapping our citizens and give them a chance to mature. If they choose not to, then they have made their choice….the wrong one.
If Obama or Hillary get in the White House, they will raise taxes, increase the unemployment, slow down our economy, turn a blind eye to terorism abroad and here in the states, and continue to buy votes by giving ignorant fools socialist entitlement programs to stay in power.

Brett says if a Dem wins in November, America will just be like …. Europe. Oh my — we won’t be in the same economic and housing crisis we’re in, people will have health care, we won’t have thousands of troops risking their lives overseas in the midst of a religious/civil war, and the value of the dollar might go up again so Americans can travel again with money in their wallets and without shame,. Oh no, tell me it won’t be true. People might actually believe in Government again and that will end the conservative right’s plan to bring down the U.S. government.
Oh and I live in D.C. where we have plenty of taxation but no representation. Maybe a Democrat in office might do something about that finally.
