The World is Watching

March 5th, 2008 in Dipdive in Texas by Hillel Aron

After the madness that was the Precinct 4001 caucus, I rushed over to the Obama rally. It was only six blocks away.

They had waited until 9 to start letting people in, in order to make sure that everyone attended the caucuses. I got a pretty good spot to stand, roughly 20 feet away from the stage.

The group of people around me shared stories about their caucuses. Most were giant messes. We all checked our cell phones for election returns and traded information. Obama was ahead in Texas, but Clinton was closing fast. It seemed cruel to stick us out there without a TV.

Look, it’s Max Kennedy!

We didn’t know when Obama was going to come out. It was cold. Most of us were tired and hungry.

Finally, at about 10:30, Michelle and Barack Obama came out.

The audience went nuts. He kissed Michelle and told her he loved her before stepping up to the podium.

You can watch the speech here. It was short and a bit toned down compared to some of his other speeches. But it was moving nonetheless.

“If I am the nominee of this party, I will not allow us to be distracted by the same politics that seeks to divide us with false charges and meaningless labels. In this campaign, we will not stand for the politics that uses religion as a wedge, and patriotism as a bludgeon.”

“There is a young man on my campaign whose grandfather lives in Uganda. He is 81 years old and has never experienced true democracy in his lifetime.”

Without missing a beat, a woman in the audience shouted, “Neither have we.”

watching_06.jpg

“During the reign of Idi Amin, he was literally hunted and the only reason he escaped was thanks to the kindness of others and a few good-sized trunks. And on the night of the Iowa caucuses, that 81-year-old man stayed up until five in the morning, huddled by his television, waiting for the results.”

“The world is watching what we do here. The world is paying attention to how we conduct ourselves. What will they see? What will we tell them? What will we show them?”

my blessings and prayers. this is a humbling experience..we have to ro;ll our sleeves while contuing to maintain dignity. Let the clinton team know that our man will not give up, give in to either the knowledge that he is our next president nor the indignation the clinton’s ignite. We will sand tall and gain strength in knowing that you were placed here to represent us all. your spirit inspirers, your intelligence awe’s your dignity is so strong.. I know we will win. I know so much that I shed a tear. not because of loss because I am humbled. we were humbled because we became too excited at the thought of our tomorrow. we were humbled so that we would step litely and fofully and not be tripped by the blindness of so many wins. I am glad for this period of time.. regroup Mr president and maintain the faith. we are here for you and celebrate our humanity. congratulations on your success as a candidate and more importantly as the man. such a man. your strength is felt. I look forward to Mississippi. you go to Mississippi. they need to see you .. get some rest.

Yes the world is looking, but what American does not understand, the rest ofhe world has always known. We, Black americans, are brave, couragous, intelligent and forthright. They have witness the Tuskegee Airman in flight, the soldiers who fought to free France and are recognized yearly forthe past 50+ years, the muscians, artists and other intelligentisa who left this country to find thier solidarity and recognition in far away lands. Yes the world is watching, they already know the greatness we possess. They are just surprised it has taken us so long. My father, who was born in Natchez Ms, who was a laborer all his life, he and my mother raised 6 children in the south, but he taught us dignity by his relentless pursuit of the rights we deserved in this country. I am proud to live inthis time to see a man of dignity and determination to work for all people to live a good life as God planned. My father would be so proud of your preception of he future for all God’s people.

I have a dream, hope is what we need in this country, we can all have everything we so deservingly need, i’m so hopeful for a better day when all men are created equal. Let us come together one nation under just a supreme being. No child will go hungry. We can have it all. We can change the world for all of us. Lets join together and unite for the common good of all people. I have faith in every voter in this country that we can put this great man who came from nothing into that great white house in Wahington. Join me in celebrating Barack Hussein Obama and everything he stands for. Hope.
Wow! I just wrote 116 words of absolute bull-shit and probably inspired all of you. See how retarded you people are. Barack Obama is pumping sunshine up your you know what and you are either to stupid to realize it, or are so blinded by your attempt to put a man of color in office that you dont care that the message is empty jibberish. God help us all.

  5. Thomas Says:

As we continue down this road that is a historic election, we must look towards hope. My question for Kevin, how can words be jibberish and empty? Words are the we as individuals communicate. Have you ever tried to talk with someone who speaks a different language? If you have, mostly likely you struggled with communication. I may be wrong, but McCain and Clinton have both used words in their candidacy for President of the United State of America. Have either of those two said anything of substance?
Words, what are words? Words are the hope that we have. There is potential for greatness when words are used properly. inspiration to action can be beneficial to the masses. Ideas become movements, and movements are put into action to change something, whether big or small. Every idea starts in the mind of one person, and through words and ideas of others movements are created. The action and application will be seen, if we as the American public can comprehend our role in the democratic process. Take ACTION. I see hope in each person, a hope for a better tomorrow, a hope for better foreign relations, and a hope for a better America. Let’s take this opportunity to change the perception the world has about our country.
YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN!

  6. Chris Says:

When i listen to the words of Barack Obama, I am truly inspired. When I was a young boy, I was inspired by the words of Jhon and Robert Kennedy, Marten Luther King. Nothing will ever change that. When they were all killed, it felt like evil had taken over the most powerfull country in the world. The people of the United States of America, were refused the truht, the freedome to choose to have men who cared abuot them, run the country, but rather, men who cared only about their self interest, steal it from them. It’s time for America to take back what was stolen from them so long ago. Don’t let them fool you into darness once again. The World is Watching. I have faith Obama will win the election and it will reflect on the rest of the world, for the good of all men.

  7. Terry Says:

Once in a generation, someone will rises up, with a vision, rising beyond race or gender…..Senator Obama is such a person.

  8. Ron Bakker Says:

I am a Canadian. I cannot vote in the American election. I have no voice to speak for you. But I know something, I know that if Democrats vote for Hilary Clinton, they have voted for establishment politics, they have voted for greed, for power, for cynicism, for everything that Americans have been accused of around the world. I did not think it was possible any more, for a leader with vision and passion to rise out of the nation that was given birth by leaders of vision and passion. I did not think there could ever be another Lincoln, a leader who chose his country over his own self interests, Whether or not Obama can live up to his desire for his country is immaterial, what matters is that he so badly wants to try. He believes in America. In politics, this is a frightening rarity, Leaders no longer believe in hope, they believe in power. Obama is different. My great fear is that Americans will fail to recognize that, and lose what perhaps is the greatest opportunity they have had to vote for hope and for peace. Obama represents America’s opportunity to build bridges, to exude the strength that comes from wisdom, and to be the greatest nation on earth for reasons other than military strength. Obama is the best part of you.

  9. DD Says:

    To Kevin

Words alone do not always inspire. The right words from the right person can inspire and move a nation and this great world. Are you happy with the leadership that we have had until now? Do you think that change is not required? On the grandest of scales? You just need to watch China and India (2.5 Billion people, 37% of global population) …one by one …struggling to get out of poverty…and reaching out for …the American Dream. Only the American Dream is a Nightmare. A nightmare for many people living today…for our planet and for our children. The American Dream as is currently defined is an anachronism. The dream needs to be redefined. Someone has to show that there is a better way. The president of the United States, getting more “stage time” than just about anyone else, needs to set the example of how our collective and individual thinking and behaviour must change if we are to salvage our world.

  10. S Johnston Says:

Since when did anybody in American politics care what the world saw? Or that it is watching? We have been watching a Bizarro America for eight years now.
You shoulda cared when you invaded Iraq under pretense of lies
You shoulda cared when you allowed the brutalization of prisoners
You shoulda cared when you dismissed any kind of climate change plan
    ad infinitum …
But you dont, nor shall you…
Here’s what the world is watching … Anything BUT America, anything non-American
In fact we ourselves fled America and its so-called dream.
This one man sounds good, looks good, talks a great line too …
The new truth is that the world is watching for any exit far far away from the America of today, its become just too caustic.

  11. Adam L Says:

There’s no food and no tv at those rallies? I am even more impressed. USA! USA!

  12. OBAMA SUCKS Says:

Obama is a joke. HE promises change. That change is a president who will not get one thing done. THe change will be no laws or bills being passed. He will get us in huge trouble with terrorist and extremists. The man has the worst foreign policy ever. YOU CANT BE DIPLOMATIC WITH TERRORISTS.WERE THEY DIPLOMATIC BEFORE HITTING THE WORLD TRADE CENTERS. also his wife who is a healthcare expert goesfrom making 100K a year to 380K after obama runs for president. As a healthcare expert she should not be making that much money. That takes away from the ppl that need money for HEALTHCARE>>>

JOHN MCCAIN 08′ only logical pick

  13. zoop Says:

    YO, “OBAMA SUCKS”

you got your facts messed up. you need to take a closer look at true American History to know that terrorism is allowed to perpetuate under the guise of the legitimacy of the US military. Do your research on the atrocities that WE, as Americans have allowed to continue- like Abu Ghraib. That is the type of thing that John McCain is going to keep on keeping on. There’s enough truth out on YouTube videos. you could start there.

  14. OBAMA SUCKS Says:

Youtube videos are not facts or evidence half the videos are people saying what they believe and changing it for the liberal media. I dont follow crap like that and my facts are not messed up. I do know two people who are completly fucked up the Are: REVERAND WRIGHT AND BARACK H. OBAMA. I as a follower of christ and as someone who goes to church every sunday and sends his children to sunday school would never go to a church and send my kids to a man like that for 20 years when i knew he was like that unless i believed him. See what im saying, obama has lied about many things.

  15. Revolution Says:

    HEY OBAMA SUCKS
What are you deaf to Hillary Clintons lies, she lies and exaggerates to make her self seem like more than Bill’s little woman, this is to show Monica Lewinsky she’s a better woman, nothing more, Hillary is a sick egotistical puppy who’s been dogged by her husband her whole marriage she wants to show him she is just as good as he is and guess what when the news of his infidelity broke they ( The Clintons) invited Reverand Jeremiah Wright to the White House for counseling. She can not run america, she can’t even run her home and earn the love and respect of her husband. She needs this win to redeem herself not to help the country, she longs to be one of the boys ladies, don’t be fooled! Hey Obama Sucks your ignorant ass has to know by now that Christ more likely than not was a Black man you ignoramus I hope the polls close on your ass! John McCain belongs in Jurassic Park!
